by Peta Bee, Sunday Times You’re on your bike, but how fit is it really making you? We explain how to get a toned body in the saddle

The number of people getting on their bikes is rising. In London alone, crowds pedalling to work have doubled in the past decade. But does cycling regularly make you fit? The distance of the average cycling commute in the UK is 8.7 miles. This could be a good a workout as going to the gym but only if you have the right technique. So, how can you maximise the fitness gains? Tweaks to your cycling style can work muscles harder. Experts recommend not setting gears too high, to avoid expending unnecessary effort, and placing the ball of the foot on the pedal, with toes pointing forwards, while aiming for 60-80 revolutions a minute on flatter surfaces. This will maximise blood flow to the legs.

The benefits of participation in Special Olympics extend beyond the physical benefits of sport; it’s about team spirit, friendships and fun; it’s about a feeling of belonging and a sense of being part of a community. Special Olympics changes lives in so many different ways, enabling people with an intellectual disability to achieve and win not only in sport but in life too.

Thursday 25th February 2010 Withdrawal of Physiotherapy cover will have detrimental effect on injury recovery time, return to match fitness and return to work The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) has today voiced their concerns that the recent decision by the GAA to limit Physiotherapy reimbursements as part of its player injury scheme will have a negative effect on player health and welfare. The scheme had, in the view of ISCP, erroneously reimbursed many treatment disciplines under the overarching ‘Physiotherapy’ category, not solely those provided by medically recognised Chartered Physiotherapists.
